Queen graces women conference

KUCHING: Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah graced the 13th Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) Area Conference for Southeast Asia and the Far East, here yesterday.

Her Majesty arrived at 10am accompanied by the wife of Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib and the wife of Sarawak Premier, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang.

The conference gathered 202 women delegates from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia.

ACWW for South East Asia and the Far East area president Norjanah Razali said the women delegates comprised both member societies and non-member societies.

“I’m happy to mention here that we have delegates from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia. Malaysian delegates are from Pahang, Penang, Johor, Kelantan, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Sabah and Sarawak,” she said.

She also conveyed her appreciation to ACWW World president Magdie De Kock who came all the way from South Africa to attend the conference.

The Sarawak Federation of Women’s Institutes (SFWI) has been hosting the ACWW Area Conference for South East Asia and the Far East since 1964.

This year’s three-day conference, which started on July 4, is the 5th ACWW Area conference that SFWI is hosting.

The ACWW Area conferences are organised for women NGOs and community-based organisations (CBOs) in South East Asia and the Far East which aim to uncover new learning and share knowledge through its plenary and educational visits; present information and findings through its area meetings and societies’ reports; and build networks and form collaborations with women from within and outside the country. Apart from that, SFWI-ACWW conferences highlight significantly that women, irrespective of their localities or countries could in fact assist each other in the field of education, environment, technology, societal advancement and leadership positions.

Also present was Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.
